TED Topic: CONNECTED BUT ALONE

Original TED Talk: 23 minutes

Summary: 321 words

Connected but alone

Sherry Turkle is a cultural analyst that shaded the light on how harmful the technology is on the society in general and on individual in specific. It’s changing human minds, the way they think, they care and the way they are connected to each other. One of her biggest concerns is how social media is affecting our daily lives in which people are replacing conversations with text messages, emails and Facebook posts. Backwards it seemed disturbing to have such connections but these days it’s normal and familiar. For example, students get distracted in class when receiving or posting anything, concentration is lost.

One more thing popped is how ignorant the parents are to their children, thus how deny the children will be to each other. Moreover, Sherry was shocked from an 18 years old teenager when he said that one day he ‘I’ll think of forming a conversation because conversations takes place in real life and you can’t control what to say. In her opinion this will drop him in a deep lie in which no appreciation to people, no direct contact to those creatures, no feelings are exchanged.  Sherry’s second concern is social robots that offer companionship to the elderly and to the children. A research was done in a nursing home to study how social robots are affecting humans.

One of the elderly who lost her son was conducting a real conversation with the robot; she was trying to make sense of her social life with a machine that has no human experience. What if there was anyone to listen to this poor lady, to take care of her, I’m sure she wouldn’t’ have turned her back to be part of an intangible world. As we are humans we have to take advantage of technology in the right way and to solve these problems by having real conversations, real feelings, not to put any third fake connection between us.

the 5 main points:

1-    Technology changes who we are.
2-    The effect of social media on our daily lives.
3-    Lack of appreciation between people.
4-    Social robots are replacing humans.

5-    How to take advantage of technology in the right way.
